A Quick Survey

I wanted to say thanks to Alex, Josh, and Trent for coming to our worhsip gathering last night. Even though I got my butt kicked playing Halo 2 afterwards, it was fun. I haven't played my X-box in a while, and really enjoyed getting back into it.
At our gathering last night, we discussed relevant metaphors, and Jesus' great use of them. He always seemed to have a great way to express the good news to the people he was with. Like Nicodemus: an older man and a Pharisee who was part of a movement that was doing nothing for his soul. Nicodemus comes to Jesus at night and wants to know the "mystical" secret of the life Jesus has. Jesus tells him he must be born again. The woman at the well, who has been looking for satisfaction and validation through her relationships with men, finds that Jesus brings eternal satisfaction. The Rich young ruller gets a money talk. Zaccheus gets accpetance from a righteous man. Great ways of expressing the good news of Jesus Christ! So, here's what I need from everyone who reads this: Take a moment to comment and let me know what would be good news to you. What would be the metaphor that speaks most to you about the good news of Jesus Christ. For example, mine would be that there is a Father who will never leave me, and who will enable me to raise kids who make a difference. What's the good news to you?

You mention video games. I love playing them as well. I am a sports nut. Madden 2006 rocks. The other day I was playing and trying to make it through a perfect season but was getting my tailed kicked by the Vikings for crying out loud. As the clock started to tick towards 0:00 I knew that this game was about to be counted as a LOSS and that my memory card would soon save this onto my francise mode. So like anyone with high morals and integrity I took this whipping like a man....and RESET the game. This gave me the chance to play the Vikings again (this time my passing game was on and I won) and thus perserved my perfect record (so far).

What does this have to do with your post?

I love the idea of forgiveness. Do overs. Mulligans. Second chances. Restarts. Resets.

When life doesn't go the way we wanted or planned, God's grace is always new. It's a reset away. A fresh start. A new beginning.

the larger narrative of God's creative act, man's fall and the struggle for redemption of man and creation is the side of our faith that sticks with me.

as a result, mythological metaphors like those Lewis writers often have the most meaning for me.

This reminds me of a conversation we had in your office about 3 or 4 years ago about changing your metaphor for Father. I will have to think about this one, for I have been lazy. I used to have a good answer for this, but my mind is mush now.

BillyV, your mind can't be mush! You are the sharpest guy I know. I had forgotten about that conversation until this morning. That was a while ago. I guess God began this process in me long before I realized it. Crazy.

I really need to know that God can provide for me now and for my future. I read the Scripture like in Corinthians where it says He is able to provide seed for the sower and bread until the harvest and I know He is willing, but can He do it for me? Just once it would be nice to know it wasn't my wearing myself out, stretched to the limit, juggling jobs. I go between anguish in prayer over provision to ignore it to watch my dollars daily, and no matter, I can't be a man of integrity in finances. I am not really capturing this well, but I know He can, but will He?

I love that God's power is made perfect in my weakness. He doesn't look down on me becuase I am weak but instead says, "Look what I can do" and He is able to use me in ways I never thought possible.
